Join us to check out the cove where Henry Hudson anchored the Half-Moon to escape the tidal current and admire the view of Manhattan. The pace is a little more vigorous on this trip. We’ll take a break on a hidden beach, and maybe pop into a coffee shop. Macchiato, anyone?

We stay on the Manhattan side of the river for a kayaker’s-eye-view of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Although we keep a respectful distance, we can still see the Apollo space capsule that was recovered by the Intrepid after its historic splash-down.

How is your stamina? This is a more vigorous paddle on the Manhattan side of the river. We’ll see how Midtown looks from the water and enjoy seeing the different vessels anchored at the marina – there are still a few residential houseboats.

This is an intermediate trip heading north and then across the river to a Japanese food market. We land on a small beach area and stop in for lunch – we’ll supply a dry-bag to protect your groceries if you want to bring some items home.

An exciting trip for intermediate paddlers who are unfazed by waterborne commercial traffic and turbulence caused by the flow of tidal currents. We can land at a kayak dock and stretch our legs on a stroll across the lawns or enjoy the shade of the beautiful trees. Valentino Park, behind Governors Island, is a kayaker’s gateway to Brooklyn. We will land on the rocky beach, visit with the natives, and maybe hunt for ice cream at Fairway before returning to Pier 40 and civilization.

Well conditioned paddlers habituated to hours in a kayak will be thrilled by this 8-hour trip around Manhattan’s 28 mile circumference – others, not so much. Pack a lunch, bring a waterproof camera and an adventurous spirit for a day of camaraderie, epic views and paddling. Lots and lots of paddling!

Intro to Environmental Factors, 2 hours
Basic seamanship introduces you to the all-important environmental factors of wind and waves, tides and currents and the effects of landforms and piers. We will also introduce the Rules of the Nautical Road required of all sea paddlers, and large vessel concerns. This class is land-based - all are encouraged to attend.

Route Selection & Paddling in Conditions, 2 hours
This course will give you a method for deciding when and where you can go on any given day. Your Instructor will talk through the effects of the environmental elements covered in Basic Seamanship on that particular day before experiencing the conditions on a paddle along the NY waterfront out in the Hudson River tidal currents.
Pre-requisites: Fund I - III and Basic Seamanship or equivalent. Rescue clinics recommended.

The Recovery, 2 hours
Begin acquiring the skills for staying upright and playing in rougher water. Course addresses your paddle finesse, climbing blade angles, use of your kayak∂s secondary stability and hip snap required for effective moving high and low braces. We will introduce the Eskimo roll. Rescues are part of the course for obvious reasons.
Pre-requisites: Fund I - III and Rescue I, Assisted Rescues.

Intro to Practical Towing, 2 hours
Eventually nearly everyone needs to know how to tow or be towed. This towing workshop covers the basic equipment and theory for towing swimmers, tired kayakers and emergency rescue situations. Practical Towing covers on-water contact tows, swimmer tows, waist and boat-mounted tows.
Pre-requisites: Fund I - III.
